The introduction of the new version of android has always been big news among the smart phone users as android constitutes the largest share of smart phone users. According to a report published in IDC android market share has raised to 78% of the smart phone users all over the world during the 1st quarter of year 2015 and it dominates the market with such a huge market share. The reason is the low cost and high quality.
Now there were a lot of rumors floating on the web for quite a while now about the new version of android is ready to be launched and the features that it will offer until Google confirmed a few weeks ago at its I/O developer conference that it is all set to announce the Android M Developer Preview for the latest android version. This new operating system will officially be launched in the next quarter of 2015 and it will definitely get a delicious name also by then which is a specialty of the android but for now Google has announced to release the preview of this new version for its nexus devices. The devices include nexus 5 and nexus 6.
The Sony today has announced that they are launching the Android M Preview available as well for their Xperia devices under their open device program. But it will definitely not come in handy unlike the Google and you will have to do a little work to have it installed in your device.
The Sony has announced a list of devices supported for this new Android M Developer Preview. These devices include:
- Xperia Z3
- Xperia Z3 Compact
- Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
- Xperia Z2
- Xperia Z2 Tablet
- Xperia Z1
- Xperia Z1 Compact
- Xperia Z
- Xperia Z Ultra
- Xperia ZL
- Xperia Tablet Z
- Xperia E3
- Xperia M2
- Xperia T3
- Xperia T2 Ultra
- Xperia T
- Xperia S
- Xperia L
However it is still not clear whether the Sony will announce it for its latest device Xperia Z3+ or not.
In their blog post Sony explained that the newly released Android M preview for its devices is for the developers only to give them the opportunity to test their applications and verify their compatibility with the new operation system soon to be released.
It will certainly provide the developers with an excellent opportunity to test their apps for the soon to be released new android version.
However there are still some differences in the Preview versions for the Google and Sony devices. While Google released the preview version that is ready to be installed but Sony is not making it that easy for their users and recommend them to follow their “easy-to-follow-guide”.
The company was also very fast to warn the customers about the limitations of this new version and stated clearly that “it is not certified for the regular use” as Sony uses the Android Open Source Project code for implementation of Android M. The camera and modem are not implemented in this preview version to make it limited for developers use only and to curb its regular use.
Summary: Google has announced the developers preview version of their new soon-to-be-launched android M version to help the developers test their applications for this new operating system. The Sony has also followed the footsteps of Google and announced the developer preview version for their Xperia devices under Android Open Source Project. However, the new limited version is only for developer use and not for regular use.
