Why External Devices Show Less Capacity than the Mentioned Capacity

Hi! Today I’m gonna teach you why external devices like pen-drive, external hard-disk , memory card show less capacity than the mentioned capacity when you bought it. Not only it shows less capacity, I will allow you only to store that much data in it.

If you have bought any external devices with high capacity then you might have noticed the large capacity defect! I use this term capacity defect, it’s not an official one!(just kidding). In small capacity drives also this capacity defect exists but it will be comparatively small!

For example, an 4 GB memory card may show you 3.8 GB as it’s capacity. While a external hard-disk of  300 GB capacity may show you as 279.39 GB! have you wondered why? Some may have wrong answers so they will not search, but you have came here! Now, I will give you right answer.

You need to be a mathematician with high dividing capability to execute this formula! (calc 😛 )

I think you know this fact! If not learn it now…

Many people are thinking that…

1 KB = 1000 Bytes
1 MB = 1000 KB
1 GB = 1000 MB

which is absolutely wrong. Correct Answer is….

1 KB = 1024 Bytes
1 MB = 1024 KB
1 GB = 10024 MB

If you understand this conversions then that’s all, you have answer for your question!

Actually capacity defect raises due to manufactures, they build devices like pen-drive, external hard-disk , memory card with accordance to 1 KB = 1000 Bytes, 1 MB = 1000 KB, 1 GB = 1000 MB. So the problem comes..

According to the manufacture 300 GB hard-disk means

300 GB = 300 X 1000 MB = 300000 X 1000 KB = 300000000 X 1000 Bytes = 300000000000 Bytes

Now your computer will take the input capacity as 300000000000 Bytes and then it will convert it into it’s language which is accurate and 100% correct.

300000000000 Bytes = 300000000000 / 1024 KB = 292968750 KB
292968750 KB = 292968750 KB / 1024 MB = 286102.29 MB
286102.29 MB = 286102.29 / 1024 GB = 279.396 GB
