How to Setup Timer Using CMD for Shutdown in Windows

Hey guys, today I will show you how set a timer in your PC to shutdown it. In this method we will set timer using command prompt (CMD) to shutdown our computer. Using CMD we can control almost all the features of computer, which was many people were using when windows was found. But now direct options are there for almost every function, rather shortcuts came to play here!

Many of might have faced this situation, like are downloading something and after it you have to shutdown your computer but you can’t do anything, and you will wait for the download to finish and then shutdown your computer, in that case, this trick will be awesome to shutdown your computer using timer.

Command Prompt is an computer readable control executable file, built-in with windows by default. Using command prompt you can declare various order to your computer, in this post I will show you how to shutdown any remote computer with your computer, Restart your computer, shutdown with specific message and setup timer to shutdown your computer.

How to Setup Timer Using CMD for Shutdown

  1. Open CMD, Goto start search for CMD and open it (or) open run command, by pressing “Windows key + R” and type “cmd” and click on run!
  2. Now your command prompt is open, using this you can instruct your computer.
  3. Now type shutdown -s -t 20 and hit enter, change the 20 with different number to increase number of seconds.

How to Restart your Computer using CMD

  1. Open CMD, Goto start search for CMD and open it (or) open run command, by pressing “Windows key + R” and type “cmd” and click on run!
  2. Now your command prompt is open, using this you can instruct your computer.
  3. Now type shutdown -r and hit enter, your computer will restart!

How to Shutdown your computer with a message!

  1. Open CMD, Goto start search for CMD and open it (or) open run command, by pressing “Windows key + R” and type “cmd” and click on run!
  2. Now your command prompt is open, using this you can instruct your computer.
  3. Now type shutdown -s -t 20 -c “Bye Bye!” and hit enter, change the text within the quotes to display your desired message, include quotes! And change the 20 seconds if you want to shutdown with any other timings.

How to Shutdown Remote computer using CMD

  1. Open CMD, Goto start search for CMD and open it (or) open run command, by pressing “Windows key + R” and type “cmd” and click on run!
  2. Now your command prompt is open, using this you can instruct your computer.
  3. Now type shutdown -s -m <Remote computer name> and hit enter, change <Remote computer name> with your remote computer name, note: the remote computer must be connected with your computer by networking, and administrator access should be provided.
Caution! To stop shutdown at anytime, open CMD and type shutdown -a and hit enter, it will stop, if you have accidently clicked on shutdown, then go to cmd quickly and do this to stop it at that point!
